THE SR SERIES OTHER EVENTS Sunday 27 April Leap Into The Aire 60 km Spring Into The Dales 110 km LINKS CTC Audax UK Audax Club Parisien Randonneurs USA |
Halifax CTC presents:A hilly 110 kilometre ride from Hebden Bridge, into the Yorkshire Dales, with a generous time limit based on a minimum speed of 12 kph and a maximum of 24 kph. Start: 9:00 am at Salem Community Centre, Salem Street, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. REPORT 48 riders out or 53 entrants took the opportunity to use the climb away from Hebden Bridge to Spring Into The Dales in this popular early-season ride which brings together tourists and racers in common cause. Once again the route had undergone changes, both to add variety and to reduce the number of main roads. This was only done by adding more hills up to a total of 1880 metres, making the event eligible for 1 whole Audax Altitude point rather than the measly quarter point on offer last year. After the event, Steve Snook was so intrigued by the amount (or possibly too tired to do anything else) that he embarked on a study of the route using the latest mapping software, and concluded that I had underestimated the total amount of climbing. The continued inclusion of the rough cart track near Cracoe was augmented by a short trip through a field near Addingham and a footbridge with steps, but the addition of the fabulous Wharfedale landscapes near Bolton Abbey pleased everybody. Of those who set out, only 2 failed to finish, both due to mechanical problems, one suffering a broken spoke which rendered the 32-spoke wheel quite useless. Unfortunately 3 riders were disqualified for failing to find the checkpoint at Earby. Apparently, one of them was using last year's route sheet - we don't know why, as he was issued with this year's at the start, and last year he didn't follow the route sheet anyway. The other 2 were disqualified because they chose to follow him rather than their own route sheets. Perhaps more importantly, they also missed the bananas and chocolate biscuits which were being handed out by our regular checker Carl Kershaw. The catering at the finish was once again provided by Jennifer Crossland who ensured that riders refuelled after their excursions. Thanks to all the people who helped in any way to making this event a success, and thanks most of all to all the riders. whether successful or not, whose enthusiasm and cameraderie once again made it such a pleasure to be involved. We hope to be back again next year, and maybe have some interesting route changes for you. Alternatively, more Altitude Points may be on offer without any change of route!
